The Oconee River In Jefferson, Georgia
OCONEE RIVER PRESERVE
“Oconee” is the Anglicized (English) form of the Creek word “Okvni” which means “born from water” or “living on water”. This word is taken from the Muskogean tribes which inhabited the region many Centuries ago. It was popularized by Hernando de Soto in his writings of his expeditions through the areas back in the 1540’s. It has been the identifying name of the northern and middle sections of eastern Georgia since that time.
The Oconee River was named after the Okonee branch of the Creek Indians, an earlier root of the Muskogean tribes. It’s 220-mile-long journey begins in Hall County and ends where it joins the Ocmulgee River to form the Altamaha River in Lumber City, Georgia. Its two upper forks, the Middle Oconee and the North Oconee, join in Athens and form the basin where Oconee River Preserve is located. These rivers create a portion of the headwaters of Georgia’s renowned “Piedmont” which is so famously recognized today. It has been said that the terrain of the Middle and the North forks of the Oconee River are originally part of an ancient mountain range from a billion plus years ago that that have been leveled over the eons through natural erosion. Proof of this claim can be found in the underlying igneous and metamorphic rocks that dominate the area as well as the outcroppings of granite and gneiss rocks located on the western flank of Oconee River Preserve on Redstone Creek.
Additionally, the path of Redstone Creek and the Middle Oconee River corridor are bordered with Rhododendrons and Mountain Laurel found typically only in the mountains of North Georgia. Oconee River Preserve offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for only a few select visionaries and cannot be duplicated elsewhere in the area. Do not miss this golden opportunity to own a unique piece of the history of our civilization.
